Unlock Global Opportunities: UW Study Abroad

The University of Wyoming offers students the chance to take their education beyond
the borders of the Cowboy State, providing study abroad programs that immerse students in new cultures, languages and academic opportunities.
Whether exploring the bustling streets of Barcelona, conducting research in the Australian
Outback or studying sustainable agriculture in Costa Rica, UW students have access
to a world of opportunities that broaden their perspectives and enhance their education.
With scholarships and tailored programs available, studying abroad is more accessible than ever, allowing
students to gain invaluable global experience while earning credit toward their degrees.
I took a visit to the Cheney International Center on campus to chat with one of the
very knowledgeable advisors. I scheduled a general meeting to get all the details and hear what my options are, but you can also schedule appointments
with advisors that are specific to the location you want to go to. The advisor that
I talked to during my general meeting told me that it is ok to not know where you
want to go or how you are going to pay for it, as UW has so many options and ways
to make your study abroad experience as stress free as possible.
The first thing the advisor will do is ask what locations sound interesting to you
and if you’re unsure the advisor will provide you with a lengthy list of the places you can go specifically for your major. They will proceed to not only show you pictures
and activities that each location offers, but also point out what may be potential
turn-offs from each location so that you can be fully informed. I found this to be
extremely helpful, as I was able to sort through what I wanted to get out of the experience
and what was less important to me.
Next the advisor will take you through the scholarship opportunities available at UW and there are a lot. They will outline general scholarships available,
as well as scholarships that are eligible to you through your major. My advisor even
told me to apply for scholarships that are for other majors, as sometimes not enough
people apply so they will award those scholarships to other students.
“The study abroad experience has been easy so far because of the helpful advisors
at the Cheney Center,” said Maddy Norton, freshman at UW. “I’m studying abroad next
spring and I could not be more excited for this experience.” UW ensures that all
students have a stress-free and positive experience from the beginning of the process
until the end.
The last thing your study abroad advisor will also talk with you about is the application
process. The process to apply is heavily dependent on where you decide to go, but
as my advisor told me, the earlier the better. As a UW student you have the option
to either go directly through the University that you will be studying at, or through
a UW program. The price varies between each option, so it is important to check both
options to see which one is more affordable. Each option has its own benefits, so
be sure to weigh the pros and cons of each. Going through UW’s program means that
you will have some classes that are taught by professors from UW, where going through
the other various universities directly means that you will be immerse in the countries
culture by taking typical classes that students at that university take. Both options
will assure that you have a positive and fun experience while studying abroad.
The University of Wyoming offers a wealth of study abroad opportunities that allow students to gain global experience, expand their academic
horizons and immerse themselves in new cultures. With the support of knowledgeable advisors at the Cheney International Center, students are guided through every step of the
process, from choosing the right destination to exploring scholarship options and
navigating the application process. The personalized attention and numerous resources
make studying abroad more accessible and stress-free than ever before. Whether you’re
heading to South Korea or researching cheetahs in Namibia, UW ensures that students can embark on life changing
adventures while earning credits toward their degrees.
