Global Corps: Connecting Students to the World

When Pratina Kandru arrived at NC State, she knew she wanted to expand her global perspective. Now, as the president of Poole Leadership group Global Corps, she’s not only broadening her own worldview but also helping fellow students discover the value of international experiences.
Global Corps is a student leadership organization that serves as an extension of the Global Programs Office in Poole College of Management. Its mission is to educate students about global opportunities on campus and abroad, ensuring they have the resources and support needed to engage in international experiences.
“Global Corps members organize and participate in information sessions, advise students on the study abroad process and experience, and implement marketing efforts to promote global opportunities,” Kandru explains. “We also launched a mentor/mentee program to help incoming exchange students adjust to life at NC State and build connections within Poole.”

Kandru’s journey with Global Corps began with a desire to break out of her comfort zone. “Growing up, I was always surrounded by the same people and rarely had the chance to engage with different cultures. Coming to college changed that,” she shares. “I wanted to continue expanding my global perspective while sharing my own experiences, so joining Global Corps was a no-brainer.”
Her deep involvement with the organization led her to serve as Treasurer and Logistics Coordinator before stepping into the role of president. “Since it was an organization I deeply cared about, becoming president felt like a natural next step.”
“As a student who studied abroad herself in South Korea for a full semester, I think Pratina is especially aware of the benefits of having a local mentor,” shares Katelyn Brown-Gomez, assistant director of global programs. “Navigating a new country, culture, and academic environment can be a big adjustment, and Pratina is dedicated to helping international students feel immersed, supported, and truly part of the Pool PACK.”
Leading Global Corps has been a transformative experience for Kandru. “Time management and accountability are crucial,” she says. “But more importantly, I’ve learned the power of compassionate leadership. When people feel supported and valued, they’re more engaged, and the organization thrives.”
“These organizations allow students to put their skills into practice, build community, and stay connected with like-minded individuals.”
Beyond logistical skills, the role has solidified her passion for making an impact. “This experience has helped me realize how much I love building connections and fostering a sense of community.”
One of the most fulfilling aspects of Global Corps for Kandru has been the mentor/mentee program. “Collaborating with exchange students has given me a fresh perspective–almost like seeing the world through a new pair of glasses,” she says. “From eye-opening conversations to unforgettable memories, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for different cultures while building lasting friendships.”
A standout moment during her tenure was hosting a pumpkin carving event for mentees in the fall. “It was the first time we organized a large-scale event like this, and it was a huge success. So much so that we’re planning to make it an annual tradition.”

Students interested in global experience can connect with Global Corps by attending events like information sessions, study abroad panels, and tabling events. “We also post takeovers on the Poole Global Instagram, where students can hear from peers who have gone abroad,” Kandru adds.
For Kandru, student leadership groups like Global Corps are essential to personal and professional growth. “I believe that the only way to grow is by stepping out of your comfort zone,” she says. “These organizations allow students to put their skills into practice, build community, and stay connected with like-minded individuals.”
Her advice for students looking to take on leadership roles? “Go for it! It’s natural to feel hesitant, but don’t let that hold you back. Leadership isn’t just about leading–it’s about listening, communicating, and learning from others. Embrace the challenges and stay open to new experiences. You won’t regret it.”
